What Does “Masonic Lodge” Mean?

The term “Masonic lodge” can describe both a local group of Freemasons and the place where that group meets. A lodge is the basic organization of Freemasonry, where members gather to conduct business, learn the fraternity’s lessons, build friendships, and serve their community.

What Happens at a Lodge Meeting?

Masonic lodges generally meet on a regular schedule. Members conduct lodge business, plan charitable and community projects, receive reports, vote on petitions for membership, and take part in educational programs. Meetings also give members time for fellowship and conversation before or after the formal work of the lodge.

The Three Masonic Degrees

New members progress through three symbolic degrees: Entered Apprentice, Fellowcraft, and Master Mason. Each degree uses ceremonies, symbols, and lessons to encourage integrity, self-improvement, responsibility, and service to others. The degrees are not academic ranks; they are stages in a Mason’s personal and Masonic development.

Lodge Officers and Leadership

A lodge is led by elected and appointed officers. The Worshipful Master presides over meetings, assisted by the Senior Warden, Junior Warden, Secretary, Treasurer, Deacons, Stewards, and other officers. Serving in these roles helps members develop practical leadership, communication, planning, and mentoring skills.

Fellowship, Education, and Service

A lodge is more than a meeting room. It is a community where men from different backgrounds meet as equals, learn from one another, support fellow members and their families, and work together on charitable and civic projects. Many lodges also offer Masonic education, guest speakers, meals, and social activities.

Can Visitors Attend a Masonic Lodge?

Formal lodge meetings are generally limited to qualified Masons, but many lodges host public events, meals, open houses, and opportunities for interested men to meet members and ask questions. The best first step is to contact the lodge or attend a public event.
